ambo は中世ラテン語 ambo を経て、ギリシャ語 ambon「縁・高まり」に由来します。分解しにくい語ですが、もとは「少し盛り上がった縁」で、そこから教会の高い朗読台・説教台を指すようになりました。ambon や ambe も同根で、「一段せり出した場所」の像を持つと意味がつかめます。
Ambo comes through Medieval Latin from Greek ambon, meaning an edge, rim, or raised projection. The central image was of something slightly elevated or jutting out. From that, the word came to mean the raised reading or preaching platform in a church. A related form is ambon.
