geodesy はギリシャ語 geo「地球」と daiein「分ける」に由来し、もとは「土地を区切ること」を表しました。geology や geometry と同じ geo を含み、土地の区分から発想が広がって、地球の形や大きさを測る測地学の意味になりました。
Geodesy comes from Greek ge, meaning "earth," and a verb meaning "to divide." At first, it referred to dividing or marking land.
