moundは中英語mound/mundにさかのぼり、古英語mund「保護・囲い」に結びつく語とされます。分解語ではありませんが、原義は土を盛って守る境界の感覚で、そこから「塚・土盛り」になりました。同系にはドイツ語Vormundもあります。
Mound goes back to Middle English and is connected with older Germanic words linked to protection or an enclosing barrier. The early idea seems to have been a raised earthwork that marked or guarded a space. From that, the word came to mean a heap or hill of earth.
