砂丘とは、砂から作られた大きな丘のことを意味します。風によって砂が吹き集められて形成された自然の地形で、砂漠などで見ることができます。

dune の語源・成り立ち Etymology
duneはフランス語duneを経て英語に入り、さらに中世オランダ語duinへさかのぼり、ケルト系の「丘・高まり」を表す語とも結びつけられます。もともとの核が「盛り上がった地形」なので、風で砂が盛り上がってできる丘という意味に自然につながり、関連語にはdownがあります。
English borrowed dune from French dune, which goes back to Middle Dutch duin. It is also linked with older Celtic words for a hill or raised ground. The basic idea was a mound or height, so it naturally came to mean a hill of sand shaped by the wind. A related English word is down.
