解説 Definition
duchy は、公爵または女公爵が治める領地・支配地を指します。歴史上の領邦や地域を表すことが多く、必ずしも独立国家とは限りません。独立した国として扱われる場合は「公国」と訳されることもあります。
A duchy is a territory or state ruled by a duke or duchess. It is mostly used in historical, political, or royal contexts. In modern English, it often appears when talking about European history or certain traditional institutions.

duchy の語源・成り立ち Etymology
「duchy」は duke「公爵」に領域名を作る -y が付いた語で、duke は古フランス語 duc、さらにラテン語 dux「導く者」へさかのぼります。つまり「公爵が導き治める土地」が公国で、同根語に conduct や induce があり、duc- に「導く」の核が見えます。
Duchy comes from duke with the noun-forming ending -y, meaning the land ruled by a duke. Duke came through Old French duc from Latin dux, meaning "leader." The idea moved from a person who leads to the territory under that leader's rule. The same Latin root appears in words like conduct and induce.
