dugong の語源・成り立ち Etymology
dugong はマレー語 duyung『海の女性・人魚』に由来し、その土地の呼び名が学名経由で英語に入った語です。人魚伝説と結びつく姿から名づけられ、海牛類の一種を指す固有名になりました。関連語は Dugongidae。
Dugong came into English from Malay duyung, a local word connected with a sea woman or mermaid. European writers adopted the regional name for the animal, probably because its shape and habits were linked with mermaid stories. In English, it became the standard name of this sea mammal.
