eclampsia はギリシャ語 eklampsis「突然の閃光・激しい発現」に由来し、ek-「外へ」+ lampein「光る」から成ります。症状が急に激しく現れるさまを「ぱっと光る」感覚で名づけた語で、意味の飛躍が少ない語です。関連語は lamp, lamplight。
Eclampsia comes through Greek eklampsis, meaning a sudden flash or sudden outbreak. It is built from ek- "out" and lampein "to shine," the same root seen in lamp. The name was used because the condition appears suddenly and violently, like a quick flash of light.
