presences は古フランス語 presence を経てラテン語 praesentia にさかのぼり、prae-「前に」+ esse「ある」が核です。present や essence も同じ esse を含み、単なる複数の存在でなく「目の前に在る気配や存在感」を表す語だと腑に落ちます。
Presences comes from presence, through Old French, from Latin praesentia. At its core are prae- "before, in front of" and a form of the verb "to be."
