ラテン語 in-（中に）+ brachium（腕）が古フランス語 embracier（腕に抱く）を経て英語に。語根 brach- は「腕」を意味し、bracelet（腕輪）と同源。「両腕の中に包み込む」が原義で、転じて思想などを「受け入れる」意味にも広がった。
Embracing is formed from embrace by dropping the final silent e and adding -ing. Embrace entered English through Old French embracier, “to clasp in the arms.” That verb was based on brace, “arm,” from Latin bracchium, also meaning “arm.” The word’s physical image is therefore that of enclosing someone within one’s arms. Its later figurative sense, “accept willingly,” grew naturally from this idea of drawing something close.
