他者のやり方や性質を手本としてまねること、またはそれに近づこうと努めることを表す動詞。人の成功や態度を見習う場合にも、機械やソフトウェアが別の仕組みの動作を再現する場合にも使われ、文脈によっては匹敵しようとする含みもある。
To emulate means to copy or follow someone or something because you admire them and want similar results. It is often used in positive contexts, unlike imitate, which can sometimes sound more neutral or negative.

emulate はラテン語 aemulari「張り合う、見習って追いつこうとする」に由来します。核の aemul- は emulation や emulator と同根で、ただの模倣でなく「相手に並ぶためにまねる」のが本来です。だから計算機でも「同じように動かす」意味になりました。
Emulate comes from Latin aemulari, meaning "to rival" or "try to equal by imitation." Its root also appears in emulation and emulator. The word did not originally mean simple copying, but copying in order to match or compete with someone or something.
