en-（中に入れる）+ list（名簿）で「名簿に名前を記入する→入隊する」が原義。16世紀フランス語 enrôler の影響も受けた。関連語: enlist（入隊させる）、list（一覧）。軍の名簿に登録する行為がそのまま「志願入隊」の意味になった。
