人や動物が血を流すことを指すほか、インク・絵の具・色などが境界を越えてにじみ出ることにも使う。物理的な出血にも、紙や布、印刷物の上で色が混ざったり広がったりする現象にも用いられる基本語。
To bleed means to lose blood from the body, usually because of a cut or injury. It can also describe color or liquid spreading into another area, especially in art, printing, or cloth. The word is used both for physical injuries and for things that slowly leak or spread.

blood（血）を知っていれば、bleed は『血が外へ出る動き』として覚えると定着しやすい。まず bleed heavily, a bleeding wound で本来の意味を押さえ、そのあと colors bleed, ink bleeds through the paper, the paint bled into the next area のように『中のものが境界を越えてにじみ出る』へ広げると一本化できる。leak は液体一般、bleed は血や色がじわっと出る感じ、という違いも意識すると混同しにくい。
Think of the close link between `blood` and `bleed`. If blood can bleed from a wound, then color or ink can also "bleed" across a line or through paper. It often gives a slow, spreading image, not just any liquid coming out.

bleed は古英語 bledan「血を流す」に由来し、その土台には blood「血」と同じ語根があります。つまり原義は『血が出る・血を出させる』で、blood や bloody と並べると意味のつながりが直感的に見えます。
"Bleed" comes from Old English "blēdan," meaning "to let blood come out" or "make bleed." It is closely related to "blood," so the earliest idea was directly about blood flowing. The meaning later stayed broad and could describe any loss of blood, whether natural or caused.
