ensuing は ensue の現在分詞形で、英仏語 ensuer、さらにラテン語 insequi「後を追う」にさかのぼります。en- は「続いて」、sue はここでは「訴える」でなく「追う・従う」の古い意味です。pursue, sequence も同じ sequi 系で、「後から続いて起こる」が語源どおりです。
Ensuing is the present participle of ensue. Ensue entered English through Anglo-French ensuer and ultimately comes from Latin insequi, “to follow after,” formed from in- and sequi, “to follow.” The element sue here preserves an old sense connected with following, not the modern legal verb sue. Pursue and sequence are historically related through the same Latin root sequi.
