覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
pursuing は pursue の語末の e を落として -ing を付けた形で、発音は /pərˈsuːɪŋ/ です。人を物理的に追うだけでなく、pursue a dream、a career、a solution のように、夢・進路・解決策を継続して追い求める場面で使います。「目標の後を前へ進み続ける」像で覚えましょう。
Take the base verb pursue, drop its final silent e, and add -ing: pursue becomes pursuing, pronounced /pərˈsuːɪŋ/. The historical core is the idea of following after something, so imagine a goal moving ahead while you keep going after it. This makes common combinations easy to remember: pursuing a dream, pursuing a career, pursuing research, or pursuing a better solution. Unlike a brief attempt, pursuing often suggests continued effort and direction. It can appear in a continuous verb phrase or function as a gerund.

He is pursuing a career in music.

The team is pursuing a better solution.
そのチームはよりよい解決策を追求しています。

pursuing の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 prosequi(pro-「前へ」+ sequi「追う」)が古フランス語 poursuir を経て英語に。語根 sequi は sequence(連続)や prosecute(起訴する)にも含まれる。「前方を追いかける」が原義で、目標や夢を追い求める意味に発展した。
Pursuing is formed from pursue by dropping the final silent e and adding -ing. Pursue entered English through Old French forms related to poursuir and ultimately goes back to Latin prosequi, combining pro-, “forward,” with sequi, “to follow.” The literal notion of following onward developed into both chasing someone and steadily seeking a goal. The same Latin root sequi also appears historically in words such as sequence.
