persuading は persuade から来ており、語源はラテン語 persuadere で、per-「完全に」+ suadere「勧める・助言する」から成ります。つまり「相手に十分に勧めて心を動かす」が原感覚で、persuasive や dissuade にも同じ語根が見えます。
Persuading is the present participle and gerund of persuade. Persuade entered English through French from Latin persuādēre, formed from per-, an intensifying element, and suādēre, meaning “to advise, recommend, or urge.” Its underlying idea is that of successfully urging someone toward a belief or action. When -ing is added in modern English, the final silent e of persuade is removed, producing persuading.
