Persuading is the present participle and gerund of persuade. Persuade entered English through French from Latin persuādēre, formed from per-, an intensifying element, and suādēre, meaning “to advise, recommend, or urge.” Its underlying idea is that of successfully urging someone toward a belief or action. When -ing is added in modern English, the final silent e of persuade is removed, producing persuading.
