persuade はラテン語 persuadere に由来し、per-「すっかり」+ suadere「勧める・助言する」に分けられます。つまり「助言を相手の中まで通して納得させる」が原義で、dissuade も同じ suade の語根を持ちます。
Persuade comes from Latin persuadere, made from per- meaning "thoroughly" and suadere meaning "to advise" or "urge." The original idea was to advise someone so fully that they accept it. Over time it came to mean leading someone to agree or act, and dissuade shares the same root.
