生体の周期的な働きや脳波、運動などが、外部の刺激や別のリズムに引き込まれて同期する現象を指す。生理学・神経科学・音響学などで用いられ、光による概日リズムの調整や、音楽のテンポに合わせた脳活動の同期などを説明する際に使われる。

Entrainment comes through French from entrainer, meaning "to draw along" or "carry with." It combines en- ("into") with a form related to train, which originally had the idea of pulling or dragging.
