Factionalism is a situation in which a group is divided into smaller groups that compete or disagree with each other. It is often used in politics, organizations, or communities where these internal divisions weaken unity.

factionalism は faction + -al + -ism で、faction はラテン語 factio「作ること、行動を共にする一団」に由来します。fact や factory と同じ facere「作る」が根にあり、人が作った小集団どうしで争う感じから「派閥主義」の意味になります。
Factionalism is formed from faction with -al and -ism. Faction comes from Latin factio, from facere "to make, do," the same root seen in fact and factory. The word originally referred to a group formed by people acting together, and later came to suggest competing groups and the mindset of strong party division.
