Partisanship is strong support for a particular political party, group, or side. It is often used when this support creates bias and makes fair judgment difficult. The word is common in politics and public discussion.

まず partisan をひとかたまりで覚えると楽です。party に近く、「同じ側・陣営につく人」という感覚が土台。そこに -ship が付くと friendship, leadership と同じく「性質・状態」になるので、partisanship は「ある陣営びいきの姿勢」。中立な political belief ではなく、判断が自分の側に強く寄るニュアンスです。ニュースでは intense partisanship, partisan divide の形で見かけやすく、fairness や objectivity と対比すると定着します。

partisanship は partisan と -ship から成り、partisan は「側」を表すラテン語 pars がフランス語経由で入った語、-ship は古英語由来です。party や participate と同じ根をもち、「ある側につく性質」と考えると党派性の意味が腑に落ちます。
Partisanship comes from partisan plus the suffix -ship. Partisan entered English through French and goes back to Latin pars, meaning "part" or "side," a root also seen in party and participate. The word came to mean the state or habit of strongly supporting one side.
