覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
fang は動物の口から突き出し、獲物を捕らえたり毒を注いだりする鋭く長い「牙」。普通の歯 tooth ではなく、「獲物をつかんで離さない歯」と像を決めると覚えやすい。ヘビなら venom flows through its fangs「毒が牙を通る」、オオカミなら show its sharp fangs「鋭い牙をむき出す」が典型。bite は「かむ」という動作、tusk はゾウやイノシシなどの大きく突き出た牙を指すため区別する。sink its fangs into ~「〜に牙を突き立てる」を、ヘビがネズミに襲いかかる一場面で固定すると定着しやすい。
Picture a snake or wolf gripping its prey with a long, pointed tooth. Unlike an ordinary tooth, it is strongly associated with catching prey or delivering venom. Remember the phrase “sink its fangs into” for the image of an animal biting and holding its target.

fang の語源・成り立ち Etymology
fang は古英語 fang「つかむこと・捕獲」にさかのぼり、さらにゲルマン祖語では「つかまえる」が中心の意味でした。獲物を“つかむ”歯という発想から「牙」になったので、ただの歯でなく相手を離さない歯だと考えると腑に落ちます。defang や fangless も同根です。
The word goes back to Old English fang, meaning “a grasp” or “a capture,” and ultimately to a Germanic word meaning “to catch.” Its present meaning developed from the idea of a tooth that catches and holds prey.
