覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

feature「目玉として取り上げる」に -ing を加えた現在分詞・動名詞で、末尾の e を残して featuring と綴り、/ˈfiːtʃərɪŋ/ と発音する。a show featuring local food のように、番組・記事・作品の中心的な人物や題材を後ろに置く形で覚える。単なる「含む」より目立つ扱いを示す。

Connect featuring with the noun feature, an important or noticeable part. When a program is featuring local food, that food is not merely present; it is being given a prominent place. Add -ing to feature while keeping the final e: featuring, pronounced /ˈfiːtʃərɪŋ/. Learn the common pattern “a show or article featuring someone or something.” The noun after featuring identifies the highlighted subject, guest, or attraction. This helps distinguish it from including, which may refer to any component, even one that receives little attention.

featuring の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語 factura(作ること)から古フランス語 faiture を経て英語 feature(特徴)となった。語根 facere は「作る・なす」の意味で、manufacture(製造)や factory(工場)も同根。「作り出された目立つ部分」が原義で、そこから「特集する・目玉にする」の動詞用法が生まれた。

Featuring is the -ing form of feature. Feature entered English through Old French faiture and ultimately derives from Latin factura, “a making or formation,” from facere, “to make or do.” It first referred to form or distinctive appearance and later to a prominent or characteristic part. From that noun sense, the verb developed the meaning “to present prominently or as a special attraction.”
