fetch
取ってくる
解説 Definition
fetch は、何かを取りに行って持ってくるという意味です。IT分野のカタカナ語「フェッチ」はデータを取得する意味で使われますが、日常英語では物や人を取ってくる場合にも広く使います。
To fetch something or someone is to go to where they are and bring them back to the place where they are needed. In computing, it can also mean to retrieve data or instructions from storage or another system.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
fetch の核は「対象の所まで行き、それをこちらへ持ってくる・連れてくる」。単にその場で取る take や pick up より往復の動きを意識する。fetch a bag、fetch water、fetch a person の形で覚え、ITでは同じ発想からデータを取得する意味になる。
The key idea in fetch is a short journey with a return: you go to the object or person and bring them back. Picture leaving a room, getting a bag, and returning with it. This distinguishes fetch from take, which often describes carrying something away, and from pick up, which may focus only on collecting it. Learn common combinations such as fetch water, fetch my bag, and fetch the teacher. Computing uses the same basic image when a system fetches data from storage or a server.
例文

fetch の語源・成り立ち Etymology
fetch は中英語を経て、古英語 fetian「取りに行って持ち帰る」にさかのぼる語です。単に取るのでなく「わざわざ行って連れ戻す」感じが核で、prefetch や fetcher にも同じ語幹が残ります。
Fetch developed through Middle English from Old English fetian, a verb meaning to go for something and bring it back. Its long-established core therefore includes both obtaining an item and returning with it, rather than merely touching or taking it. Modern formations such as prefetch, meaning to retrieve data in advance, and fetcher preserve the same verb. The computing sense extends the ordinary physical action to retrieving information.
