fiction（小説・作り話）を知っていれば、その形容詞版だと考えると覚えやすいです。fact の反対側にある語で、「事実ではなく、作られたもの」という芯を持たせると忘れにくくなります。特に fictitious name / character / company のように、名前・人物・会社などが“設定上あるだけで実在しない”ときによく使います。fictional とかなり近いものの、fictitious は「架空の」に加えて「でっち上げの」響きが出ることもあります。fake は偽物、imaginary は想像上とずらして整理すると混同しにくいです。

fictitious の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語ficticiusに由来し、土台のfingereは『形づくる、こしらえる』を意味しました。だからfictitiousは単なる嘘でなく『作り上げたもの』の感触があり、fictionやfeignと並べると、架空が創作されたものだと見えてきます。
Fictitious comes from Latin ficticius, from fingere, meaning "to shape," "form," or "make." So its original sense was not simply "false," but "something formed or made up." That is why it is closely related to fiction and feign, all carrying the idea of something created rather than naturally real.
