トンガ語で Viti と呼ばれた島々の名が、ヨーロッパ人の接触を経て Fiji に変化したもの。主島ヴィティレヴ（Viti Levu＝大きなヴィティ）が語源の中核で、levu は「大きい」を意味する。英語表記は船乗りたちの音写の揺れから現在の綴りに定着した。
