解説 Definition
focusing は focus(焦点を合わせる、集中する)の現在分詞・動名詞です。注意や関心を一つの対象に向けること、またカメラなどの焦点を合わせることを表します。

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
focusing は focus に -ing を付けた現在分詞・動名詞で、「集中していること」や「焦点を合わせること」を表します。focus が s で終わっても通常は子音を重ねず focusing と綴ります。focus on homework、focus the camera の組み合わせで覚えましょう。
Start with the base verb focus and add -ing: focus becomes focusing, normally without doubling the final consonant. Link its two main settings through the idea of making one target clear. In “focusing on homework,” attention is directed toward a single task; in “focusing the camera,” the lens is adjusted to produce a sharp image. Remember the common pattern focus on plus a topic, but use focus plus an object when adjusting a camera or lens.

focusing の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語「focus(炉・暖炉)」に由来。暖炉が家庭の中心であったことから「中心点」の意味が生じ、光学用語で「焦点」を意味するようになった。関連語にfocal(焦点の)、refocus(再び焦点を合わせる)がある。-ingは動名詞・現在分詞を作る接尾辞。
Focus comes from Latin focus, meaning “hearth” or “fireplace.” Because the hearth was a central point in a home, the word later developed the sense of a center or concentrated point. It entered scientific use for the point where rays meet and then gained its modern sense of concentrated attention. Focusing is formed by adding the present-participle and gerund suffix -ing to focus.
