founding は found「設立する」の名詞化で、中英語を経て古フランス語 fonder、さらにラテン語 fundare「土台を据える」にさかのぼる。語根 fund- は「底・基礎」を表し、foundation や founder と同系なので、「基礎を置くこと」から「創立」の意味になったと分かる。
