A futurist is a person who studies, discusses, or predicts future changes in society, technology, or culture. In art history, it can also mean a member of the Futurist movement, so the meaning depends on the context.

futurist は future＋-ist「…する人」。future はラテン語 futurus「これから在ることになる」に由来し、語の芯は「まだ来ていない存在」です。futurism や futuristic も同根で、未来を先取りして考える人だと意味がつながります。
Futurist is formed from future and the suffix -ist, meaning a person concerned with something. Future comes from Latin futurus, meaning "about to be" or "going to exist." The word therefore carries the idea of someone focused on what has not yet come; futurism and futuristic share the same root.
