gable は古ノルド語 gafl や古英語 geafol と同系のゲルマン語に由来し、家の端のとがった部分を表した語です。屋根の両面が合わさってできる三角形の“先端”の感覚があり、ドイツ語 Giebel も同じ仲間です。
Gable comes from an old Germanic word seen in Old Norse gafl and related forms in Old English and other Germanic languages. It referred to the end or top part of a building, especially the pointed end under a roof. The sense stayed close to that original shape in English. A related word is German Giebel.
