dormer はフランス語 dormir「眠る」に由来し、さらにラテン語 dormire「眠る」へさかのぼる。もとは屋根裏の寝室に関わる語で、dormitory や dormant と同根。寝る部屋を明るくする窓だったため「屋根窓」の意味になった。
Dormer comes from French dormir, "to sleep," and goes back to Latin dormire, also meaning "to sleep." It was first connected with rooms in the roof space used for sleeping. Because such spaces often had a window built into the roof, the word came to mean that roof window.
