gadfly は gad「突く棒・とげ」と fly から成り、gad は古ノルド語系で「鋭い先」を表しました。goad や yard と遠い同根で、家畜を刺して落ち着かせない虫だからこそ、転じて人をしつこく刺激する厄介者になるわけです。
Gadfly is made from gad and fly. Gad comes from an Old Norse-related word for a pointed stick or sharp point, so the name first meant a fly that stings cattle and keeps them restless.
