gaseous は gas に「〜の性質をもつ」を表す接尾辞 -eous が付いた語で、gas 自体はフランドルの学者がギリシャ語 chaos になぞらえて作った語です。chaos や gasoline を連想すると、形の定まらないものが広がる感じから「ガス状の」が腑に落ちます。
Gaseous was formed from gas with the adjective suffix -eous. Gas itself is a relatively modern word, created by the Flemish scholar Jan Baptista van Helmont, probably influenced by Greek chaos. The word kept the sense of something diffuse and hard to contain, and gaseous came to describe that state more directly.
