消化器系の疾患や機能を専門とする医師。胃腸科医とも呼ばれる。
覚え方のコツ
長い語ですが、gastro- は gastric（胃）, entero- は enteritis や intestinal で見かける「腸」, -ologist は biologist や psychologist と同じ「専門家」の型と切ると覚えやすいです。3つに分ければ「胃＋腸＋専門医」。stomach pain, acid reflux, ulcer, IBS で see a gastroenterologist と結び付けると定着しやすく、surgeon のように手術担当を直接表す語ではない点も区別すると混同しにくいです。
