スポーツで得点やゴールがない状態を表します。試合全体が0対0の場合だけでなく、前半が無得点だったり、チームや選手が得点できていなかったりする場合にも使います。
Goalless means that no goals were scored. It is most commonly used when talking about sports such as soccer or hockey. A goalless game or first half can suggest strong defense or a lack of attacking success.

goalless は goal + -less。「-less = ない」は homeless, useless, endless と同じ感覚で覚えると定着しやすいです。つまり「ゴールがない状態」から、そのまま無得点。特にサッカーでよく見かけ、a goalless draw, remain goalless, a goalless first half の形が頻出です。scoreless も近いですが、goalless は“goal が入っていない”感じがより強く、球技の記事で見たら 0-0 をまず連想すると覚えやすいです。

goal は中英語 gol「到達点・標識」系、-less は古英語 -leas「ない」です。goalkeeper や goalpost と同じ goal を含み、「ゴールがない」から転じて試合で無得点、という形がそのまま意味になっています。
Goalless combines goal with the Old English suffix -less, meaning "without." Goal came into English in Middle English for a target or finishing point. So the word first meant simply "without a goal," and later became common for situations where no goal was scored.
