goner は gone + -er で、gone は go の過去分詞、go は古英語 gan 系にさかのぼります。もともと「行ってしまった人」で、そこから「もう助からない人」へ転じた語で、go や undergo を見ると、不可逆に先へ進んだ感じが伝わります。
Goner was formed in English from gone plus the ending -er. Gone is the past participle of go, from Old English gan. It first meant someone who has "gone away," and later developed the figurative sense of someone beyond help or certain to fail.
