米南部英語 goober は元来「ピーナツ」で、ガラ語経由でコンゴ系の nguba にさかのぼる語です。そこから俗に「まぬけなやつ」にも広がり、小さくて転がる豆のくだけた響きが人にも移った形です。関連語は goober pea, goobers。
