governance は Middle English governaunce を経て古フランス語 gouvernance から入った語で、govern + -ance に分けられます。さらにラテン語 gubernare、ギリシャ語 kybernan「船の舵を取る」にさかのぼり、「組織の舵取り」が統治の感覚に重なります。関連語は government, cybernetics。
Governance came into English through Middle English from Old French gouvernance.
