fax は facsimile の短縮形です。facsimile はラテン語由来で「そっくり同じものを作る」という発想から生まれました。元の文書を似た形のまま遠隔地へ再現して送る技術を表す語です。
Fax is a shortened form of facsimile. Facsimile comes from Latin facere meaning "make" and similis meaning "like" or "similar," so it originally meant "make something alike." The word was first used for an exact copy, and later the shortened form fax came to mean the technology that sends such a copy over a distance.
