古フランス語 guidage から。語根 guide（導く）はゲルマン語 *witan（知る、見る）に由来し、「知識をもって道を示す」が原義。guide（案内人）やmisguide（誤導する）も同根。-ance は行為・状態を表す接尾辞で「導く行為」の意。
