解説 Definition
gusting は gust「突風が吹く」の現在分詞で、風が急に強く吹きつけている状態を表します。
Blowing in sudden, brief bursts of increased force, rather than at a steady speed. This present participle of gust is used especially of wind in weather reports and descriptions of exposed outdoor conditions.
使い方 Usage
- the wind is gusting、winds were gusting のように、風を主語にした進行形で使います。 Use it in progressive forms with wind as the subject: the wind is gusting or winds were gusting.
- 天気予報では gusting up to ... の後に風速を続け、突風時に達する速さを示します。 In weather reports, gusting up to followed by a wind speed indicates the speed reached during gusts.

Gusting is the -ing form of the verb gust. Gust is generally traced to Old Norse gustr, referring to a cold blast of wind, and is related to gjósa, “to gush or burst forth.” English added the participial suffix -ing to describe an ongoing or repeated action. The word therefore preserves the central image of air suddenly bursting out or increasing in force for a short time.
