解説 Definition
先天的な障害や発達障害のある人が、日常生活や職業活動に必要な新しい能力や技能を習得・発展させるための医学的・教育的支援と訓練。失われた能力を回復するリハビリテーションとは異なり、初めて能力を習得させるプロセスである。
Habilitation is training or support that helps a person develop skills they have not had before, especially for daily life or social adjustment. habilitation は中世ラテン語 habilitatio にさかのぼり、habil- は habilis「適した」、-ation は名詞化語尾です。able や rehabilitate と同根で、もとは『使える状態にすること』という発想だから、能力開発や社会適応訓練の意味につながります。
Habilitation goes back to Medieval Latin habilitatio, from habilis meaning "fit" or "suitable." The original idea was making someone or something fit for use or ready for a role. It is related to able and rehabilitate, which keep the same sense of fitness or readiness.
