hadith はアラビア語 hadith（語られたこと、伝承）に由来し、語根 h-d-th は「起こる・新しく生じる・語る」を表します。もとは預言者の言行を伝える「報告」で、出来事を伝えた記録だからこの意味です。同根に hadatha、huduth があります。
