カリブ海の先住民タイノ族の言葉「Ayiti（山の多い土地）」に由来。コロンブス到達後スペイン語・フランス語を経てHaitiとなった。-anは「～の人・～に属する」を表す英語の接尾辞。山がちな地形がそのまま国名になり、その住民を指す語となった。
