hangar はフランス語 hangar を経て、さらにフランク語系の haimgard「家の囲い地・囲われた場所」にさかのぼるとされる。garden や yard と同じ gard 系で、「囲って保管する場所」という芯があるので、飛行機を収める格納庫の意味が腑に落ちる。
Hangar came into English from French hangar. It is thought to go back to a Frankish or Germanic form meaning an enclosed place near a house or yard. The central idea is a covered or enclosed place for storage, which later became the word for a building where aircraft are kept; it is related to the same family as garden and yard.
