フランス語hacher（細かく刻む）に由来し、原義は古フランス語hache（斧）。データを細かく切り刻んで固定長の値に変換する様子から計算機用語となった。関連語にhatchet（手斧）、hash（細切れ料理）がある。
Hashing is formed from hash plus -ing. Hash ultimately comes through French hacher, meaning “to chop,” which is related to hache, “axe.” English first used hash for chopped food and later for a confused mixture. Computing adopted the word for transforming data into a compact hash value, extending the image of breaking up and rearranging material according to a procedure.
