9世紀ペルシャの数学者アル＝フワーリズミー（al-Khwārizmī）のラテン語名 Algoritmi に由来。彼の著書がヨーロッパに計算手法を伝え、その名が「計算手順」の意味になった。地名ホラズム（現ウズベキスタン）出身を示す名前である。
Algorithm ultimately comes from Algoritmi, the Latinized form of the name of the ninth-century Persian mathematician al-Khwarizmi. Latin translations of works associated with him helped spread methods of calculation using Hindu-Arabic numerals in Europe. His name first became connected with arithmetic procedures, and the word later broadened to mean any precisely defined sequence of steps for calculation or problem-solving.
