helm は本来、船を操縦するための「舵」や操舵位置を指す名詞で、そこから転じて組織や計画を動かす「指揮」「主導的立場」という比喩的な意味でも使われる。take the helm で、舵を取ることや責任者として指揮を執ることを表す。

helm は古英語 helma「舵・操縦」に由来し、ゲルマン祖語 *helmaz、さらに印欧祖語 *kelp-「つかむ・握る」にさかのぼる。手で握って船の進路を制御する道具だから『舵』となり、比喩的に『主導権』も表す。関連語は helmsman。
Helm comes from Old English helma, meaning a steering handle or rudder. It goes back to Germanic roots and probably to an older Indo-European root meaning "to grasp" or "hold." The sense grew from something held in the hand to control a ship, and later to the figurative idea of being in control, as in helmsman.
