hers
彼女のもの
解説 Definition
ある物が女性一人に属することを、後ろに名詞を置かずに表す。「彼女の物」という意味。
A possessive pronoun indicating that a thing or things belong to or are associated with one female person already identified. It stands without a following noun, often replacing a phrase such as “her bag” to avoid repetition.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
her bag は「彼女のバッグ」、the bag is hers は「そのバッグは彼女のもの」と対にして覚える。hers 自体に「彼女の+もの」の意味が含まれるため、hers bag とは言わない。mine、yours、his、hers と同じ所有代名詞の仲間として、名詞を繰り返さずに済ませる語だと覚えると使いやすい。
Contrast her bag with the bag is hers. Her must come directly before a noun in its possessive use, but hers already means “her one” or “her things,” so no noun follows it. This makes hers useful for avoiding repetition: my desk is smaller than hers means smaller than her desk. Group it with the other independent possessive pronouns mine, yours, his, ours, and theirs. A simple check is to ask whether the noun has already been stated or understood; if so, hers can stand alone in its place.
例文
That blue bag is hers.
あの青いバッグは彼女のものだ。
My desk is smaller than hers.
私の机は彼女のものより小さい。
I found my keys, but she could not find hers.
私は鍵を見つけたが、彼女は自分の鍵を見つけられなかった。

hers の語源・成り立ち Etymology
女性の所有を示す her に、所有代名詞を作る語尾 -s が加わって成立した形です。中英語期以降に用法が広まり、現代英語では her book のように名詞を伴う her と、単独で使う hers が区別されます。
Hers developed from the possessive form her with an added -s, a pattern that became widespread in Middle English. This ending helped distinguish an independent possessive pronoun from a possessive determiner placed before a noun. Modern English therefore contrasts her book with the book is hers. Although the -s resembles the possessive ending used with nouns, hers is now a fixed pronoun form and is written without an apostrophe.
