覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

she–her–her を「彼女は・彼女を(に)・彼女の」の順でセットにすると覚えやすい。her は動詞の後の I saw her や、前置詞の後の with her で使う。一方、her bag では「彼女の」となり、後ろに名詞が必要。目的語の her と所有の her を語順で見分けると定着しやすい。

Learn the sequence she–her–her as subject, object, and possessive determiner. She met me uses she as the subject, but I met her uses her as the object. The same object form follows a preposition: with her, for her, or about her. Her also has a second grammatical use before a noun, as in her bag, where it means that the bag belongs to her. Use word position to separate the two: object her follows a verb or preposition, while possessive her directly introduces a noun.

例文

I met her at the station.

私は駅で彼女に会った。

Please give her this letter.

彼女にこの手紙を渡してください。

We talked with her after class.

授業のあと、私たちは彼女と話した。

her の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古英語の女性代名詞 hēo の与格・対格形 hire に由来します。現代英語では女性を指す目的格として使われるほか、her book「彼女の本」のように名詞の前に置く所有を表す形にもなりました。

Object-form her descends from Old English hire, a dative and genitive form associated with the feminine pronoun hēo. As English lost much of its older case system, her became established for both direct and indirect objects and after prepositions. The same historical form also developed into the possessive determiner used before nouns, as in her book. The target use here is specifically the object pronoun corresponding to subject-form she.
