In grammar, dative describes a form or case that shows the person or thing receiving something or being affected indirectly. It is often used for the indirect object, and it appears mainly when talking about languages and grammar.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
dative は単体で覚えるより、give/send/show/tell のように「物を相手に渡す」動詞と結びつけると残りやすいです。`give someone something` の someone 側、つまり受け手・向かう先を示す格だと押さえるのがコツ。accusative が直接の対象、genitive が所有なら、dative は「誰に」の位置。ラテン語やドイツ語で見たら、まず indirect object の印だと連想すると整理しやすくなります。
See the middle of the word: `dat-` in grammar often goes with giving. Think of verbs like `give`, `send`, `show`, `tell` and ask: who receives it? If you see `dative`, remember the `to someone` position, not the direct thing.

dative はラテン語 dativus に由来し、さらに dare「与える」にさかのぼるので、もともと「与えるための格」です。data や mandate と同じ語根を持ち、誰に何かを与えるかを示す役割が「与格」だと見えてきます。
Dative comes from Latin dativus, from dare, meaning "to give." In Latin grammar it was the case used for the person or thing to whom something is given. That is why the name of the case carries the idea of giving. The same root appears in English words such as data and mandate.
