Memory Tip
The center is `right`, but not just in the sense of correct facts. `Righteously` has a strong moral feeling, like doing something because you believe it is right and just. It also helps to compare it with `self-righteously`, which sounds negative and proud.

Etymology
Righteously comes from righteous + -ly. Righteous goes back to Old English rihtwis, built from right and an element meaning "in the manner of" or "wise," so the original sense was "in a right way." From that, righteously developed the meaning of acting in a morally right or just manner; right and rightness are related words.
